Ngāti Paoa Iwi Trust is excited to offer a range of beginners courses to learn our chiefly language in 2023. Our courses are specifically designed for whānau of Ngāti Pāoa.
Our courses are designed and developed on the principle of whānau empowerment which can be summed up in this extended version of an often quoted whakatauki: Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōnā te ngahere. Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōnā te ao. Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga Māori, nōnā te ao tukupū. The bird that eats the miro berry, owns the forest. The bird that consumes knowledge, owns the world. The bird that consumes Māori knowledge, owns the universe. |
The main aim of Me He Kuaka Reo o te Kāinga is to empower whānau through language, culture and identity. In that light, our programme focuses on creating Māori speaking kāinga through learning and teaching te reo Māori and tikanga that relates to whānau specific activities that occur mainly in the home or at a whānau event such as a trip to the beach. The language skills you acquire through this programme can also transfer into other aspects of your life. For example when you meet and greet friends and work colleagues outside of the home.
This course also provides an overview of Ngāti Paoa history and opportunities to visit and learn about some of our cultural sites of significance. We also explore Ngāti Paoa marae protocol through a noho marae experience. |

Course options
Māori language experts agree that being fully immersed in te reo Māori is an effective way to learn. Whilst this may seem challenging for some of our whānau, our experienced Kaiako are passionate about supporting you on this life changing journey. We are also offering bilingual courses for whānau who are not quite ready for full immersion. |
