Tena koutou ngaa uri a Paoa

This email is to give you a brief update from your Treaty Negotiators.
You may have seen the Ngaati Paoa media releases and wanting to provide clarity of Ngati Paoa's position.
For your information we attach the Media Statement sent on the 31 August 2015.
As the Ngaati Paoa Mandated Treaty Negotiators is to protect the Ngaati Paoa Treaty Settlement Package.
We want to assure you as portrayed in the media, that there is no legal claim against Waikato Tainui and/or the Kiingitanga.

We are mindful that the details of Kiingitanga claim are in process and that is between Waikato Tainui and the Crown where Iwi Mana whenua will be informed and discussion by Ngaati Paoa at that time will take place when the details are more clearer.

The issue for Ngaati Paoa, is the Ngaati Whaatua o Orakei High Court action and the impact on our present treaty settlements and Ngaati Paoa's interests in Central Auckland. This is our primary focus. Our position is Ngaati Paoa has historical and contemporary interests in Central Auckland.

A process and steps by your negotiators are being considered to protect our Ngaati Paoa Treaty Settlement Package and mechanisms to ensure that our footprint in  Central Auckland is maintained and affirmed now and into the future. Legal action is one mechanism to address this issue.

We hope this clarifies the situation.

Ngaa mihi

Hau Rawiri and Morehu Wilson
Ngaati Paoa Mandated Treaty Negotiators
