Over the past 15 years, Auckland Council has supported the events that make up the Matariki Festival in Tāmaki and this year they are taking it a step further - and Ngāti Paoa have the honour of hosting the 2016 event in partnership with the Council.
Auckland Council and Mana Whenua invite you to the Dawn Karakia led by Ngāti Paoa, to herald the start of Matariki Festival 2016. Like our ancestors, cross the waters to Waiheke to witness the dawning of Matariki.
Experience the karanga, the sounds of ancient karakia and waiata. Commemorate our tupuna, rejoice our generations to come and celebrate the return of the Matariki constellation to our skies.
When: 6amSaturday 18 June
Karakia followed by breakfast
Where: Waiheke Library under the Mata Kupenga pou carvings, 131-133 Oceanview Road, Oneroa, Waihake.
Travelling from Auckland: Parking and chartered ferry service available upon confirmed attendance. Bookings are essential for this free service.
Note: chartered ferry departs at 5.05am and return ferry from 10am.
